Turmeric is not technically a root. The familiar golden portion is a rhizome, an underground stem related botanically to ginger.
Kew describes Curcuma longa as a cultivated plant originating in southwestern India. It is propagated primarily through pieces of rhizome rather than seed.
Cultivation & commerce
Turmeric prefers warm tropical or subtropical growing conditions. The rhizomes are harvested, cleaned and typically cured or dried before being ground into the familiar golden powder.
Commercial production is particularly important in India and Southeast Asia, although turmeric is now cultivated throughout many tropical regions.

Traditional uses
Traditional systems have used turmeric preparations in connection with:

What modern research has studied
Supported by some human evidence
Osteoarthritis symptoms:
Meta-analyses of turmeric and curcumin preparations show encouraging results for some measures of knee pain, stiffness and function. NCCIH describes the initial evidence as positive while emphasizing the need for better-quality research.
Promising, but not established
Research is ongoing into:
- cholesterol and blood lipids
- metabolic health
- nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
- inflammatory markers
- oral mucositis
- mood and other conditions
At present, evidence is not sufficient to conclude definitively that turmeric or curcumin is beneficial for any particular health purpose.
Important research distinction
Turmeric is not the same thing as isolated curcumin.
Whole turmeric powder, concentrated curcuminoid extracts and enhanced-bioavailability formulations can behave differently. Findings from a concentrated extract should not automatically be applied to culinary turmeric.
Safety & cautions
Food-level turmeric is widely used.
Supplemental turmeric or curcumin can cause:
- nausea
- reflux
- stomach upset
- diarrhea
- constipation
Some highly bioavailable curcumin formulations have been associated with reports of liver injury. Supplemental turmeric during pregnancy may also be unsafe.
