Traditional Kashmiri Spice Tea
Kashmiri Kahwa is one of the oldest and most beloved tea preparations of the Kashmir Valley — a spiced green tea blend with roots in the Himalayan hospitality tradition that dates back centuries. Prepared in homes, guest houses, and family gatherings across Kashmir, Kahwa is the tea offered to welcome guests and mark the rhythm of the day. Our blend follows the traditional recipe: organic green tea, whole spices, rose petals, and a finishing note of almond.
Ingredients
Cardamom*, Rose Petals*, Ginger*, Cinnamon*, Cloves*, Black Pepper*, Almond*, Green Tea* (All Organic)
The Ingredients
Green Tea — The base of Kashmiri Kahwa. A lightly caffeinated foundation that carries the spice blend without overpowering it. Kashmiri Kahwa is traditionally made with whole-leaf green tea, simmered rather than steeped.
Cardamom — The defining aromatic of the blend. Cardamom is ubiquitous in South Asian and Central Asian culinary traditions and forms the backbone of Kahwa's characteristic fragrance. Both the pods and seeds contribute to the flavor.
Rose Petals — Dried culinary rose petals add a floral, slightly sweet note that gives Kashmiri Kahwa its distinctive gentleness. Rose petals are a traditional ingredient in Kashmiri cuisine and appear in numerous regional preparations.
Ginger — Warming and aromatic. Ginger has been used in Indian spiced tea preparations for centuries and adds depth and heat to the blend.
Cinnamon — Sweet and woody, cinnamon is a classical chai and Kahwa spice. It rounds the blend's warmth and adds body to the brew.
Cloves — Bold and resinous, cloves are used sparingly in the traditional recipe for their intensity of flavor. A small amount creates a lasting finish.
Black Pepper — A traditional warming spice present in Kashmiri chai and Kahwa preparations. Adds a subtle, clean heat that complements the cardamom.
Almond — The traditional finishing touch of Kashmiri Kahwa. In the original preparation, whole blanched almonds or almond slivers are added to the brew for richness. Our blend includes almond to honor this tradition.
What Is Kashmiri Kahwa?
Kahwa (also spelled Qahwa or Kawha) is a traditional spiced green tea preparation originating in the Kashmir Valley of northern India. Its name derives from an Arabic word for a type of beverage, reflecting the cross-cultural trade routes that historically ran through the Kashmir region connecting South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
In Kashmiri culture, Kahwa is more than a beverage — it is a ritual of hospitality. It is served in a traditional copper samovar called a samovar or sher samovar, poured into small handleless cups called khos, and offered to guests as a mark of welcome. The preparation is slow and deliberate: whole spices are simmered with green tea leaves, and the brew is ladled out with care.
The blend varies by household and region, but the core ingredients — green tea, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and rose petals — are consistent across traditional recipes. Almond is the characteristic finishing element that distinguishes Kashmiri Kahwa from other spiced teas of the region.
How to Brew
Simmer method (traditional):
- Bring 1 cup (240ml) of water to just below boiling — approximately 85–90°C / 185–195°F
- Add 1 heaped teaspoon (approximately 2–3g) of Kahwa blend per cup
- Simmer gently for 3–5 minutes — do not boil aggressively, as this can make green tea bitter
- Strain into your cup and serve immediately
- For a stronger brew, simmer for up to 7 minutes or increase the amount of blend
Steep method (quick):
- Add 1 heaped teaspoon to a tea strainer or infuser
- Pour water at 85–90°C / 185–195°F over the blend
- Steep for 4–5 minutes
- Remove strainer and serve
Serving suggestions: Kashmiri Kahwa is traditionally served plain or with a small amount of honey. It is not traditionally prepared with milk.
Honey Pairing
Kahwa pairs beautifully with a small amount of honey stirred in after brewing. The floral and spiced notes of the tea complement mild to medium-flavored honeys particularly well. We suggest:
- Orange Blossom Honey — floral and delicate, echoing the rose petal notes in the blend
- Sourwood Honey — buttery and mild, a more complex pairing for the cardamom and almond finish
Add honey after brewing, not during simmering, to preserve its character.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Kashmiri Kahwa?
Kashmiri Kahwa is a traditional spiced green tea preparation from the Kashmir Valley of northern India. It is made with green tea, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, rose petals, black pepper, and almond — a blend rooted in centuries of Kashmiri hospitality culture.
Does this tea contain caffeine?
Yes. Kashmiri Kahwa contains organic green tea, which is a naturally caffeinated ingredient. The caffeine level is moderate — lower than black tea and significantly lower than coffee. Simmering for shorter periods will result in less caffeine extraction.
Can I add milk?
Traditional Kashmiri Kahwa is not prepared with milk — it is served plain or with honey. Adding milk is non-traditional and will change the flavor profile significantly. For a creamy spiced tea experience, Masala Tea Leaves (a black tea blend) is better suited for milk-based preparation.
What size should I order?
The 1 oz pouch makes approximately 10–14 cups and is ideal for trying the blend or for occasional use. The 2 oz and 3 oz sizes are better value for regular brewing and for households that drink Kahwa frequently.
